The E65 railway line belongs to the pan-European transport corridor connecting the Baltic regions with the Adriatic Sea and Balkan areas. In Poland, the 1,355-kilometre-long Corridor VI railway line connects Gdynia and Gdańsk via Warsaw with Katowice and the country’s southern border.
A comprehensive reconstruction of the Katowice Szopienice Płd. – Katowice – Katowice Piotrowice section of the E65 railway line includes, among other things, the change of the double-track layout to a four-track layout from Katowice Szopienice Płd. to Katowice Ligota with an exit towards Chorzów Batory. The reconstruction of the track system is to cover a total of about 85 km of single track and about 133 km of overhead line. In addition to the extension of the line, modernisation of the existing stations and stops (Katowice Zawodzie, Katowice and Katowice Ligota) and construction of new ones (Katowice Uniwersytet, Katowice Akademia and Katowice Kokociniec) are also planned. In addition, the current Katowice Brynów stop is to be relocated to the A4 motorway area. A total of 14 platforms are to be modernised and seven new stops are to be built. In addition, 140 engineering structures are to be modernised, including railway viaducts in Katowice over Damrota, Francuska, Św. Jana and Mikołowska streets, as well as the subway between Wojewódzka and Mariacka streets.
Due to the realisation of the investment, train travel in the Silesian Voivodship will change significantly. In addition to new stops and modernised stations, there will be an additional separate track, which will allow the agglomeration railway and the long-distance railway to be separated from each other, which will have a positive impact on the improvement of rail traffic within the Katowice agglomeration.
The gross value of the contract is almost PLN 4.2 billion, and the completion date for the basic scope of work has been set at 48 months.
